I had the gift of visiting the home of Ate Juday, one of the women I’ve spent a lot of time with here in the Philippines. Her family welcomed me with so much kindness. We shared a meal, sang karaoke, played games, and had great conversations. It was a special time I won’t forget. As I got to know her family more, I learned that they’ve been through some difficult seasons, especially in their relationships with one another. But sitting around their table that night, watching how they laughed and loved each other, I saw a family that chooses to stay together. It was moving to witness that kind of unity in the middle of a story that hasn’t always been easy.
Ate Juday and I had a long talk about our lives growing up. One thing that stood out to me was how much she has stepped into the role of peacemaker for her family. When conflict arises, she’s the one her siblings call. Even through the ups and downs between her parents, she’s been the one ushering in God’s word to bring a space for healing and helping them move forward. She shared that, because her life has been more stable than many of her friends, she sometimes doesn’t know what to say when asked to share a testimony. But as we talked, we realized that being able to be a steady, peaceful presence is its own powerful testimony. God has used her obedience to bless her family and create a different kind of story, one of reconciliation and faith.
Her mom was so sweet and clearly loves her kids deeply. Her dad was gentle and even teared up during one of our karaoke songs. Her brothers were fun and lighthearted, and her sister was incredibly welcoming. I left their home feeling seen and cared for. I really hope to spend more time with them in the future. They’re a precious family, and it’s clear that God has done so much through Ate Juday’s presence in their lives. The foundation she’s built on God’s word has helped hold them together and kept them from so much more pain. It was a meaningful experience I’ll always be thankful for.
