Mombasa SLAM

Hi friends and family! I have just finished up another SLAM camp and this one was in Mombasa Kenya. This SLAM camp so so special for many different reasons. I met so many new people and saw God’s work at the end of the week though the testimonies of these SLAM students. It was a quick time of SLAM. It only lasted 2 and a half days.

What God did in people in 2 & 1/2 days was really amazing though. My service project group had a rough start to the day of service. We were going to be serving an elderly women by building her a rocket stove but she had gotten sick the night before.

So they’re we were Julian, Vickey, Malachi, and I plus eight other SLAM students just waiting on a dirt road for instructions of what else needed to be done. As we were waiting I started talking to this wonderful woman named Winter. She was talking to me about how she wanted Kenya to know that the projects that the camp was doing they could all do on their own. She asked that I pray for the Kenyan’s to have passion to serve their neighbors to serve each other and take care of their communities. I loved how passionately she was speaking, I also loved that she was even in that moment deciding what she was going to do.

As we continued waiting for what was next Vickey showed our group how to make a rocket stove. Rocket stoves are low maintenance and cheap to build, it keeps the smoke out of the house so it is a very helpful tool especially in the developing world.

Winter was so interested and had so many questions she would clarify to make sure that she was understanding all that was being said. She then said to herself that she was going to build that and try it serval times until it worked. She wanted to be a blessing and really serve her community and I loved watching her passion as she spoke of what she believes that Kenyans are capable of. She is right to. They can serve and do things to benefit those around them.

What I found really amazing was her testimony on the beach at the end of SLAM. She spoke about her desire to make a change in her community and to be someone that helps others realize they can be doing the same thing. She was so filled with joy and a desire to get something done. I am so grateful that I got to meet her. I am excited to hear about where she is at and what she is doing with that desire for change. I also hope that I can hear about it directly from her. Hoping and praying I can see her again and talk about all that God has done in our lives. I’m going to miss that friend that i made but I will be praying for her as I continue to follow the Lord and she does as well.
