Hospitality & Service

This week I’ve had the oportunity to help head up the Hospitality efforts for SLAM as a Trainee under Jen Nyago. She has encouraged me from the beginning to keep in mind how I will do everything i’m doing here, “there.” I knew that hospitality covers a wide range of areas of service, but I never really knew just how much, until this week. Hospitality fills all the gaps that everyone needs but won’t necessarily notice until it isn’t happening. After getting to shadow Mrs. Nyago, I’ve seen what it looks like to demonstrate genuine care and hospitality to those who we are receiving. God’s Word commands us to welcome the sojourner, but this is no easy task when it comes to over 150 students plus their leaders. It requires a ton of effort and coordination on the part of many people. This whole week has been a huge puzzle with many moving pieces, but what I do know is that people have been cared for and everyone has had everything they need. I definitely forsee myself serving in the same capacity when serving abroad. It is incredibly important that people feel welcomed and wanted when they come into an unfamiliar place, especially when that hasn’t particularly been their experience in life. I forsee many more challenges serving abroad in this capacity as we will be dealing with limited space and resources as well. It’s going to require much creativity and grit, which I believe the Lord has been cultivating in my heart this week. It’s kept me in a place of dependence on God for everything I need, which is a place I want to stay.
