Howdy team, It’s Max, back at it again with another blog.
One neat little thing we do between SLAM weeks with our teams seems to be going to the movies. Last night, our team (Americans and East Africans) watched that new Superman movie. It was pretty good at first, but near the end it kinda sucked, not gonna lie.
My point is, after the movie, we rode to our lodging place. I got the honor of sitting next to Ritah, a young lady on our East African team. She’s a little more quiet than most, but everyone agrees her words are always intelligent.
At the start of our SLAM week, Mr. Garner pointed out this trait she had, and that she would make a good Bible teacher. She had previously expressed interest in this.
We talked about the themes of the film. In it, Superman finds himself struggling with the political, corporate, and legal powers of the world. He intervenes in a power struggle between two countries, preventing a war, which would bring countless deaths. But people said he was abusing his power, and questioned him, allthewhile he struggles with his humanity.
We talked about how this correlates with Jesus’ struggle with the powers of his day. He was solely concerned with bringing life, and the world was directly opposed to it, meanwhile he was a man who felt temptation and sorrow.
If we image Jesus, we will find ourselves persecuted in a similar way. Jesus said “you will be persecuted for my name’s sake” I think this could go beyond people making fun of you with their words.
There were other details and considerations we made through the film, but I have little time.
This has been Max, and I’ll catch you on the flip-side.
