It’s been a long time coming, and I’ve finally made it to Africa!
My initial feelings were one of shock. I want to testify that home is not a geographical location, but where we find ourselves connected to the people we are with.
Upon arriving at the airport in Africa, we were greeted by a series of wonderful people who have been part of the GOD international ministry for some time now. They welcomed us with open arms, big genuine smiles, and celebratory noises. However, to be completely honest, I still had some fear about what this trip would be like for me.
A lot of my fear, I believe, stemmed from an insecurity of thinking that because of being African American and not knowing anything about my history, I would make up assumptions in my head, believing that I would either be judged or that I would feel even left out in ways. Insane thinking, right?!
We left the airport and headed to our lodging, Green Valley, for our EA SLAM leadership conference in Entebbe. As we arrived, there were drums and singing happening. I walked off the bus and saw all these beautiful people just smiling, dancing, shouting, hugging—all sorts of things—and I just felt so loved.
While being in Africa, many people asked what I thought about being here, and I’ve responded with, “I’ve only felt at home.”
Ive spent a lot of time with Subbi and Victor two of our East African students and our connection is out of this world. Immediately Victor greeted me with “My long distant brother! Finally we meet!” I had to quickly realize that i’m limiting God. How am i going to allow my culture and insecure thoughts dictate how my connection with people will be made. When we are connected to the same God and learning and living out his word these are the things that brings us together. All of our times together have been filled with building each other up, speaking truth in love, and reflecting on how God has been moving.
“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, “not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”
