Uganda Service Project

Yesterday, I had the privilege of helping lead a group of East African SLAM students in a service project in the small town where our Uganda GOD campus is located. Everything here is within walking distance from campus, which shows how small of a town it is. The town has one main road and a smaller side road, lined with small shops, fruit stands, and families sitting outside their businesses. Everyone seemed to know everyone and the way I experienced seeing the town for the first time is something I will never forget.

Our project focused on picking up trash along the roads. As we walked and worked together, we filled several bags and made a visible impact on the town. But more than the physical change, it was the conversations and connections that made the day so meaningful. I spent time getting to know the students in my group and a few of our East African leaders. As we served side by side, we shared stories, laughter, and encouragement. We also had some beautiful moments connecting with local people, who welcomed us with kindness and expressed how blessed they were to have us serving their community.

Earlier in the week, we visited St. John’s Primary School– just a short walk from our campus– and spent time with the children there. That connection made our service even more personal. We weren’t just spending time with the children– we were caring for the community we have been a part of.

As we served, I was reminded of Galatians 5:13, which says, “Through love serve one another.” What we did may seem small– picking up trash– but when done in love, even the smallest acts become part of something sacred. Jesus didn’t just preach from a distance– He walked among people, sat with them, served them, and loved them. I believe that’s exactly what we were invited into yesterday: a simple, humble act that reflected God’s heart for community, stewardship, and service.

This experience reminded me that the Gospel is often lived out not in grand gestures, but in small, faithful steps of love. Uganda is amazing and it is so evident to see how much God has been moving and shaping each and every one of us here.
