The breakthroughs

When we first arrived in Kenya, we were struck by how beautiful the country was the mountains, the trees, the rich history. It felt like something out of a dream. One of the highlights early on was spending time with the NFC soccer team. We watched them play, shared a meal together, and had an incredible time connecting with them.

After those first few days of fun and fellowship, it was time to lock in. Kenya SLAM was starting, and there was a lot to prepare. We headed to the train station for a ride to Nairobi, and from there, we piled into mini vans that drove us to Mombasa. As soon as we arrived, we took a quick group nap, much needed, and then got straight to work.

We knew this week could be life-changing for the kids we were about to meet, and we wanted to give them our very best. When the kids finally arrived, everything shifted. The atmosphere was filled with laughter, energy, and joy. I remember speaking with a woman I initially thought was one of the youth participants. She turned out to be a leader. She was vibrant, full of joy, and eager to be used by the Lord.

Within the first hour of meeting her, she opened up and shared her story of some of the deep struggles she’s faced and continues to face. I felt led to speak life into her through Scripture. I shared how vulnerability and testimony are powerful tools for growth, and how God desires to walk with us daily, shaping how we view the world and ourselves. On the last day, we woke up at the crack of dawn and went to the beach. It was peaceful and beautiful. Later that morning, we had a time of sharing testimonies. The stories were powerful so many youth and leaders had breakthrough moments, recognizing destructive cycles in their lives and choosing to break free from them.

Lelo, the woman I had spoken with earlier, also shared her testimony. She expressed deep gratitude for the work we did and the ways she had come to know more about who God is. She said she no longer felt lost or forgotten. Her words moved me deeply, and I’ll never forget her or her story. The youth in Kenya are hungry for truth and ready for more. What we experienced was just the beginning.
