God Shouldn’t Be Defined by Culture

Hello all,

While in Morristown, we were blessed with the opportunity to visit our sister church and have a time of worship and fellowship with them. Frankly, it was an incredibly impactful experience. Seeing the spirit move through a body that comes from different cultural contexts and even languages is humbling and beautiful.

In reflecting on that time, I’ve come to consider something, our culture so often informs how we engage God, and this isn’t inherently a bad thing, but God moves in a way that surpasses our cultures and preferences. We can’t box God in. You don’t get different experiences of God if you come from this background or the other (though you may engage things like worship or prayer differently). We all come to know the same God through his word which is constant.

God has called all people who are willing to do his work, it is our responsibility then to answer that call and put in the work to be conformed to his will (or his image, in which we are made). Culture, background, and experience can inform us, but they don’t define us when we walk with God, he does.

In Christ,
Tyler Worlow
