Coming Alive

This past week I helped put on a SLAM Service plunge in Mombasa, Kenya. Going into this SLAM plunge so much was new, even for our leaders. It was through working hard and trusting God that made this truly one of the most impactful SLAM experiences I’ve witnessed (including the ones I attended as a SLAM student). It was the shortest SLAM plunge we put on this summer but I saw all of my friends give everything they had in order to fulfill their role well and with God.

Something I heard repeatedly from students during SLAM was that they had not seen Gods Word get put into action like this before. During focus groups I got to watch students realize that the reason they hadn’t seen Gods Word come alive was because they didn’t really know His Word. So much of their understanding was based off of what other people said.

Mr. Garner consistently emphasized how important it was that the students read the actual words in the Bible. “Look at the words!” was a refrain I came to really appreciate as Mr. Garner taught, because he was trying to get all of us to read and know the Bible for ourselves. Mr. Garner pushed the students by addressing complex concepts in the Bible and he did so out of respect. It was beautiful to see students come alive as they got to experience Gods Word coming alive.
