I think sometimes we can put limitations on what ministry looks like. But Jesus sets an example of ministry that is both adaptable and creative. Jesus spoke to so many varying crowds of people: different backgrounds, languages, cultures, religious affiliations, etc,. And he did so in a dynamic way to the degree he is still known as one of the greatest teachers to ever live. I think when it comes to youth ministry, especially with this generation, it’s necessary that we tap into the creativity that God blessed us with, and even modeled in his creation of the world in Genesis.
Among my varying responsibilities and roles in helping to facilitate this SLAM youth week, I was able to be on the Late Nites team. Essentially, at the end of each day, we performed a show (similar to SNL) that included musical performances, skits, game shows, video sketches, and fake commercials, choreographed dances, etc. that all reinforced the biblical theme of 1 Peter 2:9 that was taught throughout the week. One of my contributions to this team was filming and editing some prerecorded commercials/videos each day to be shown at the late nites show.
This task both challenged me, but also broadened my scope of perspective concerning the ways in which I can do ministry for youth in media. I loved being able to contribute to our Late Nites team in this way and to see and hear how much these youth enjoyed these late nite shows but most especially, the biblical lessons they were able to learn and hold onto while also engaging a fun and comedic time together.
