The past few days me and our team went to Mombasa, Kenya where we hosted a SLAM youth conference. The SLAM youth conference had multiple service projects that the Kenya youth were able to do that they can take back with them to do in their own communities all over Kenya. One of the projects that I was able to participate with alongside them was planting trees and trash pickup at a local institution for young adults to get an education. The environment was chaotic and dirty. People’s environments can heavily affect their experience when learning. Me and my group were able to plant over 20 trees around campus providing shade and beauty. There was also a plot of land in front of the institution that the community owned, but often use as a trash dump. Because they didn’t know what to do with it. So we did, what was called slashing where we took a machete and cut the grass down then picked up all the trash underneath. The kids in my group at the end. The kids in my group were able to tie this type of service project to Genesis 1 where God ordered and created a hosbitsble environment and wanted to do the same back in home. I’m grateful to God for this amazing eye-opening moment for me, and all the kids in my Group.
