Day 4!

Today, I had the opportunity to go to Cumberland View Towers which is an assisted living home. Me and the SLAM group that I helped lead cleaned sixteen apartments! I used to do these type of projects when I was a young participant at SLAM and I remember being able to put a smile on the resident’s faces by making jokes or singing songs. This go around now being 18 years old I have a lot more awareness when it comes to the resident’s lives such as often being alone and their family not visiting them. Some of the resident’s have disabilities like a wheelchair that prevents them from cleaning their apartments well to where they are often left with a trashy environment. Serving them today felt so much more personal and I decided to make sure I saw them instead of just completing the project. I sat down with them, looked in their eyes and asked about their lives. One lady we served recently lost her husband of 38 years a few months ago. I shared to her about losing my grandpa and we were able to connect over the hard lost. I asked questions about her husband and she seemed to light up when talking about him. When we finished cleaning she had tears in her eyes telling me that she missed him so much and she was glad to be able to talk about him with me because she hasn’t in a long time. This moment reminds me that while there are projects to complete the people are what matters and the impact that can happen when God’s love is shown.
