While on our way to Kenya, we stopped and stayed the night at a church. When we arrived at this church at about 11 pm, a bunch of people greeted us. They held a church service for us at 11 o’clock at night.
The next day, we held a soccer game. It was between our soccer and NFC boys against the local soccer players. Most of our people went and watched the game. Over 1,000 people showed up to watch the game.
While watching the game, little kids started coming over and standing or sitting with us. It brought me joy that they weren’t scared to come see us.
As the game went on, I started playing with some little kids. As I was playing with them, I noticed something similar about them all. They all had very bloated bellies and most of their belly buttons were popped out. When I noticed this, it became really heavy on my heart. These little kids all had really bloated bellies because they hadn’t had food in awhile. They also had popped out belly buttons caused by things coming through the abdominal wall. Finding these out made me so sad.
After the soccer game, we went back to the church where they had put together a meal for the whole community. I was helping the little kids get food. As I watched them eat, you could watch their bellies shrink a little bit. The kids even moved around to different spots to try and get more food because they were so hungry. This has weighed so heavy on my heart since I seen it and I really wish I could provide food for all of them.
Going through these experiences of people not always having food for every meal has made a huge impact on me. I wish everyone could come experience these experiences that I get to see and realize how blessed we are.
