Finding a Comfortable Place

2 Corinthians 1:7 “Our hope for you is unshaken, for we know as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in our comfort.”

A number of years ago, I found my introverted self in uncomfortable situations where I had to engage in challenging conversations in diverse groups of people. The Lord has continued over the course of my life to hone a skill set that remains much in need on this internship.

A recent observation while here in Uganda has led me to consider how introversion is not always the challenge. Often it stems from being comfortable or rather being willing to be uncomfortable in a given setting. Someone noted a common problem during their singular visit to the meal tent, specifically a white and black table sitting side by side rather than being ethnically diverse.

While there is no doubt systemic issues require change, it is not uncommon for all of humanity to find a comfortable place with those they know regardless of color or nationality.

Of note is the very real need to be uncomfortable, or to begin to find a comfortable place in discomfort, engaging with those around us regardless of preconceived notions for which we have no control. Jesus certainly modeled this as he engaged with diverse people groups although we do not know if he felt uncomfortable.

I’ve witnessed and participated with this summer intern team engaging with everyone here in Uganda, with our Kenyan brothers and sisters, and our family in El Salvador. We are family. We are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a kingdom without borders where we love and care for our brothers and sisters no matter where we are in the world even when it’s not comfortable.

Our team is rising to the occasion and I am exceedingly proud to serve alongside of them!
