ElSal SLAM

Hi Friends and Family!

The second day of SLAM we went to serve in the Milago community by cleaning up trash with the SLAM kids. This community is a slum area and has so much trash where they live. That experience was a hard one but at the same time it was good. I got to talk to some of the SLAM kids with the few Spanish words I know and them trying very hard with their English. It was an interesting experience because I realized that many of these students have either been in situations like this where their homes looked like these ones or they know someone that is in that situation. I think that experience is something that got me after the trip to Milago, something I am still thinking though and processing.

After that trip we ended up going to Lake Coatepeque the official El Salvador lake. What I really appreciated about that trip was that the heart behind it was to make sure those SLAM students felt special we took them on a boat and we got to have good conversations with the students.

Then after that we headed to a restaurant where we tried something called a putaco which is a pupusa and taco combination. Anyways the tacos were very late to be ready and so what else could we do but jump in the pool at that restaurant??? We swam and danced and talked and waited for tacos. What I really loved about that day was that I was sitting at a table with four girls that I hadn’t met until that evening and they where all so special and I got to learn about them and hear their stories. One of the girls name was Isis. She is a very intelligent and sweet girl, she is in her senior year of high school and wants to continue her education after.

I loved talking with her and dancing with her and some the other girls as we waited for our putacos. We made up our own dance moves because none of us really knew what we were doing. It was so special to connect to those young girls though things that may seem silly but it broke the ice and that night at worship I felt God asking me to pray over Isis, and I did. I prayed things that I didn’t know about her but I felt I should pray for and come to find out later the things I prayed for were true. After praying over her the worship music kept going and I was hugging her while I was praying then I just started singing over her and she didn’t let go and neither did I. It was a moment that you wish would last forever. God was present and he helped me see her so she would be seen and known. I am praying I see her again soon. Until then I am praying for her and all those students that I met and love so much. Love, Brooke.
